Interesting.

What about an option for home-school grants?

I would gladly homeschool my daughter, or at least set up a charter with interested neighbors, if I could fund the process.

It's interesting how no one questions being "forced at gunpoint" (as a friend of mine loved to hyperbolically put it) to send their kids to the local public school, but everyone suddenly thinks that other "mandatory benefits" such as healthcare suddenly make us communists.

The real issue is corruption. Look at DC, Jersey City (before it thankfully cleaned up its act), Detroit and other cities, mostly low-income, in which the public schools are basically just a money laundering front. Look at other government-funded organizations like the CPS, CFS, and DSS. The Mondale Act assures that child "safety" organizations receive profits for placing children in adoptive and foster homes, and few questions are asked of parents who can't afford lawyers.

Until we address corruption in government agencies, especially education, nothing is going to be solved. And a good education that stresses virtue, ethics, civil responsibility and healthy self-expression as well as academics, is the only hope I can see of ever resolving this on a grand scale.
